Study on the elongated beam moving in viscoelastic fluid

The microorganisms and bacteria fill in the humor and blood of the animal. To live and breed, the microorganisms and bacteria have evolved the prefect ability to swim efficiently in the ambient fluid (viscoelastic fluid). To defense the microorganisms and bacteria from hurting the heath of the animal or take advantage of the microorganisms and bacteria to cure some diseases, study on the swimming style of them is of great significance. In this paper, the motion of the elongated beam immersed in viscoelastic fluid, which can model for deformation of most microorganisms, is studied. The elongated beam can move freely (rigid motion is also considered) and deform in the linear elastic range. The fluid is modeled using classical Oldroyd-B constitutive equation. The interaction between the beam and the ambient fluid is modeled using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method. Specifing the different movement types (undulatory waving motion, rotation pyramidwise and the motion combined waving motion and rotation), this paper has studied the propulsion of the beam and has discuss the propulsive efficiency of different movement type. To evaluate the effect of the viscoelasticity of the fluid on the motion of the beam, same simulations are also implemented in the newtonian fluid.
